Wonder What Antioch Would Think?

Christian (khris-tee-an-os’)- Christianos

Christ- Jesus Christ

ian- of, relating to, or resembling:

a Christian, that is, follower of Christ.

After the persecution that arose about Stephen, the testimony of Christ traveled as far as Phenice, Cyprus and Antioch. We are told that the disciples were called Christians (followers of Christ) first in Antioch. Acts 11:26.

Today, the connotations associated with the name Christian carries many different thoughts.

There are those that think that just because they are born in the United States this places them under the umbrella of the Christian faith, as the United States is often viewed as a Christian nation.

Others take on this politically incorrect ascription because they either presently attend, or at one time in their life have attended a protestant denominational church.

While other don the name simply for fashion purposes, even the wearing of the cross around ones neck is not uncommon place by musicians or those in Hollywood.

Even when Miley Cyrus (alias: Hannah Montana) was interviewed by Barbara Walters, Cyrus said that she would not end up like Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, or Jamie Lynn Spears because she is a Christian.

You see, in our society we can consider ourselves Christian without the commitment and conviction that Christ said His followers MUST have, if they desired to follow Him.

In fact, He exhorted the disciples to count the cost.. Luke 14:25-35, lest they begin to follow and then turn back and walk with Him no more.. John 6:66

I have given careful consideration to this phenomenon now for a number of years and have come to this conclusion; we do not have to be careful about throwing the name of Christ around or associating (Christ-ian) ourselves with Him, only because it cost us absolutely nothing.

What if naming the name of Christ could cost you your job, or you placed in jeopardy your home or all of your material possession if you professed faith in His lovely name?

What if you knew your commitment to Christ would cost you your relationship with your family, would you still follow Him?

What if going to church could result in you or your family being dragged out and beaten and if found in a continual practice, you could be imprisoned or even killed. Would you still be a Christian?

Our brothers and sister in China, India, Africa, North Korea,  that walk faithfully with our Lord have this consideration daily. Yet time and time again we find them faithful, sometimes even to death!

For our brothers and sisters that are suffering for the cause of Christ…

“for the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil” 1 Peter 3:12

For those who name the name of Christ in America….

“nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity” II Timothy 2:19
