‘spiritual cataract…….. it is’

A cataract is a clouding that develops in the crystalline lens of the eye or in its envelope, varying in degree from slight to complete opacity and obstructing the passage of light.

Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them. But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: John 12:35-37

As a pastor and teacher of God’s word, I have always been intrigued by the power of ‘spiritual blindness’ to the truth of God’s word.

Studying the life of Christ in the gospels, it has become apparent to me that the greatest degree of spiritual blindness seemed to manifest itself with those who claimed to know truth: the religious sort. People who attended worship services and heard the teaching of God’s word, Sabbath after Sabbath, were drawing near to God with their lips but had a heart far from Him, but when confronted with the truth, they blatantly rejected it.

We can see a progression to this spiritual blindness and rejection….

The first that I would like to consider is that it is so easy to see the faults (sin) in the life of others while overlooking the very same, and on some occasions more egregious acts in our own selves. It was like when the religious leaders of Jesus’ day brought a woman who was taken in the very act of committing adultery.

It was easy for them to see the sin of the woman taken and fully prepared to pummel her with stones, yet oblivious concerning their own sin, at least until Jesus intervened.

We see this blindness torqued up a notch when there was brought unto Christ one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and He healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

They saw with their own eyes the casting out of these demonic spirits into the realm of darkness, yet credited the power to Beelzebub- ‘lord of the flies’…satan. Amazing isn’t it?

There is one more example I would like to lay out before the readers. It is when the religious leaders received the testimony of those who were left to guard the sepulcher where they had laid my Lords body.

When they got news of the ‘Risen Lord’ they summoned the guards and gave them money to lie about the events. Sad, so sad but it is a powerful thing, spiritual cataract it is.

Now all the events above are testimonies of those who professed to know truth, yet lived the lie. Lest we beat up the religious sort, I am seeing this more and more from those who have rejected the truth and have chosen to immerse themselves in the wickedness of the flesh.

“Christianity is a religion for losers… I don’t want anybody to die for me.  I’ve had a few drinks and a few girlfriends, and if that’s gonna’ put me in hell, then so be it.”

-Ted Turner, Owner of Atlanta Braves & Founder of Turner Broadcast Systems (TBS)

With God it doesn’t matter if the individual that has rejected truth is a member of a church or not. Rejection of truth is believing the lie.

“For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for our sins, but a certain terrifying expectation of judgment, and the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries.” Hebrews 10:26-27
