‘spiritual anorexia nervosa’

Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: 1 Peter 2:1-2

In the first epistle of Peter, the believer is exhorted to get rid of malicious behavior, deceit, hypocrisy, back stabbing and jealousy from our character. Wow that’s pretty tuff ain’t it, if were honest with ourselves.

Apart from the second exhortation ‘as newborn babies, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby’ the first is impossible. Apart from transforming and renewing our minds through the word of God, there just ain’t no way to lay it all this terrible character aside.

Again we find the analogy of feeding upon the word of God…

For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.  But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Hebrews 5:12-14

Now from this portion of scripture from Hebrews we find the same analogy that is used in 1 Peter.. ‘feeding on milk’, but in Hebrews, it says there is a time in which the believer should lay aside the bottle (milk) and start feeding on the meat of God’s word. It would be a serious problem in a 2o year old child was still sucking the bottle, eh?

Now this is a spiritual truth that must be indulged, if the believer is going to live a life that is controlled by the Spirit of God, thereby bringing forth a testimony that glorifies our Lord.

Now the writer to the Hebrews was saying that he wanted to take them to new spiritual depths in Christ,  but that he could not…. “Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing”… because they did not have the spiritual maturity to lay hold to it.

We see a similar demise in the church today. The spiritual truths of God’s word can not and are not embraced by the church in America.  In other words the church is ‘dull of hearing’. The truths of God’s word are openly rejected or given cursory acknowledgment because they are not palatable to the flesh.

It seems that the church in America is immersed in a spiritual anorexia of sorts. Consider the following….

American Heritage Dictionary –

anorexia ner·vo·sa (nûr-vō’sə)  n.   A psychophysiological disorder usually occurring in young women that is characterized by an abnormal fear of becoming obese, a distorted self-image, a persistent unwillingness to eat, and severe weight loss. It is often accompanied by self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise, malnutrition, amenorrhea, and other physiological changes.

  • The church is afraid of becoming spiritually fat on the truths of God’s word.
  • Like the church in Laodecia, we have a distorted self image. We think that we are healthy wealthy and wise, while all along we a poor wretched and blind and need of strong meat.
  • Yet we have a persistent unwillingness to feed upon the rich meat of God’s word. About all we do is nibble around the edges on Sunday mornings.
  • And if for some reason we attend a church where the unadulterated word of God is preached, we regurgitate as soon as we get outside the walls of the church.
  • Yet we stand before the mirror of God’s word and  think all is well while denying the very lie that keeps us in a weak and ineffective testimony for our Lord.

Now if you are reading this and saying, “that is not true about me” then I say kudos to you. But look at what is happening to the testimony of the church in America. No salt….. No light…. God is merciful if we will turn to Him in repentance.

Return to Me and I will return to you, says the Lord” Malachi 3:7
