‘blogging for the lost’

Life is full of decisions…. where do I go to school after graduation? do I take this new job? to I buy this or that? have I set aside enough for my retirement? if you died today, what would happen to your family’s future? All of this are important decisions and none more important than preparations for ones future.

A better question, and that of eternal consequences, “if you died today, what would happen to your soul”?

For some this may seem like a trivial question or one that does not require immediate attention, but from the words of James the apostle….

“Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” James 4:13-14

Being raised in ‘religion’ and have some elementary understanding of the Bible, one of the most eye open truths that I can remember coming through an intimate study of Gods word was the truth about the soul of man.

Man is a spiritual being and created in the image of God….

“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23

So really what does all of this mean? Well when one dies, he does not really die. Only his body ceases to give forth life. Once the individual gives up the spirit, the breath stops, the beat of the heart discontinues, and the organs of the body begin to shut down, with this is the decay of the body begins. It returns to what it was taken from.

“In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou [art], and unto dust shalt thou return.” Genesis 3:19

But this is not true with the soul. It never dies. Back to my child hood misconception, I thought only those who believed the word of God and accepted God’s salvation in Jesus Christ would live forever in heave with him. But careful study of the scripture taught me that every soul will live for eternity. Consider the rich man and Lazarus….

There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that [would come] from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. Luke 16:19-31

Now the purpose of the story that Christ gave us about these two men tells us that death is NOT the end. It is the beginning of an eternal abode.

The story speaks only to the eternal existence of the soul not what determines the place of its abode. For that is found only in trusting what the word of God says about our sin and His salvation!

As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the son of man be lifted up.

John 3:14
