For The Proverbial Palate- 08.02.2008

My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;  Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. Proverbs 2:1-5

“The one and only method of teaching men the true religion was established by Divine Providence for the whole world, and for all times: that is, by persuading the understanding through reasons, and by gently attracting or exhorting the will.” Bartolome de Las Casas (1474-1566)

The above quotation by Bartolome de Las Casas states that the “only method of teaching men the true religion was established by Divine Providence for the whole world….” I don’t want to strain at a gnat here, but really one should say that the ‘only method of teaching men the fear of the LORD and a knowledge of this God is established by Divine Providence…’

Now those of you that follow my writings understand that I think one of the greatest enemies of the cross is ‘religion’. Those who brought the Lord of Glory to the tribunal was religious folk, if you please. I can almost assure you that when de Las Casas spoke of religion, it was not in this since, but my point is still this…

Man can learn a lot of stuff. We can teach one to read, to write and the principles of mathematics. Some can be immersed pretty deep in the things of human intellect but human wisdom can not teach nor perceive the things of God.

I have watched for some years now and found that religion is making the same futile attempt to educate churched children about the things of God. This is something that the Lord put on my heart while thinking on these truths.

“Religion’s main focus is transforming ‘bad people’ into ‘good people’. Yet the word of God says that ‘good people’ are such by the transformation and the renewing of ones mind, and that by the word of God. So in essence the individual that does not have the power of the Living Word present in their life is nothing more that a ‘good person’.” Pastor Dennis Daniel

Now before you email me and rebuke me with scripture such as “train up a child in the way he should go” and that “fathers are to bring up the children in the admonition of the Lord”, remember, I am a pastor and I agree with all of the scripture that exhorts us as parents to train our children in the things of God. But this training is not where we learn to “fear the LORD and gain a knowledge of Him”

According to the proverbs this fear and wisdom does not come from teaching in Sunday school or instruction from our parents, although they are both important, but from an intimate fellowship in and with the word of God. Consider the exhortation…

  • receive my words
  • hide my commandments with thee
  • incline thine ear unto wisdom
  • apply thine heart to understanding
  • criest after knowledge
  • liftest up thy voice for understanding
  • seekest her as silver
  • searchest for her as for hid treasures

This is much more than just going to church. This is a picture of a man that has such a desire, not only for the word of God, but a hunger and thirst that the Spirit of truth will empower this same word, in order for it to be lived out on a daily basis in this man’s life. In other words the testimony of this man will be the ‘expressed image of Christ’… then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

Blessings in His rich and faithful word my friend.
