‘how do you smell today?’

Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour. A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left. Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool. Eccl. 10:1-3

Dead flies putrefy the perfumer’s ointment and cause it to give off a foul odor…. imagine buying your favorite perfume, anticipating the sweet smelling aroma that satisfies one’s palate,  only to get the bottle home, crack the seal, and then to find out it is giving off a foul and nauseating odor. What a waste of ones hard earned money!

We can not say this of Jesus. God took upon Himself the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of man, that he might taste death for every soul, and being found in the fashion as a  man, He humbled himself and became obedient unto death, the death of the cross. For this act of love and grace, the Spirit of God says in Ephesians 5:2 that He, Jesus Christ, has given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour.

As ministers of the gospel, the Apostle Paul writing to the believers at Corinth said that when one takes the gospel into a world of darkness that he/she is manifesting a savour of His knowledge in every place.      2 Corinthians 2:14-17

Now that does not mean that everyone that stands face to face with that glorious gospel will believe it, but rest assured there is a sweet smelling aroma continues to rise to heaven, for unto those who are perishing we (the gospel message) are a fearful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved we (the gospel message) are a life-giving perfume. What does your testimony for Christ smell like my friend?

With this thought in mind, we can see how important the life (testimony, witness) of the believer in this world of darkness…

King Solomon in the Book of Ecclesiastes says that when a man that is in position or reputation for wisdom and honor carries a foolish testimony, his witness or testimony literally stinks. Therefore a wise man whose heart is in his right hand must be about walking in the light, for it is a foolish man that carries his heart turns to the left, stumbles through this world of darkness, thereby bringing forth a stinking savour.

Our witness should be liken to that of our Lord. We should give ourselves wholly unto God. We should present ourselves a living sacrifice unto God; it is our reasonable service. We should eagerly allow the Spirit of God to transform our minds by the word of God. The man or woman that gives themselves unequivocally unto the Lord will most assuredly find themselves a sweet smelling savour unto God.

When a man exerts himself, he perspires, and perspiration leads to body odor. It is true in a spiritual sense. When the believer exercises themselves unto godliness and present themselves that living sacrifice, they have a spiritual aroma, and that a sweet smelling savour. He hath called us to be salt and light… it is expected.
