‘the callousing effects of spiritual error’

War on Error  www.nicholsoncartoons.com.au

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; 1 Timothy 4:1-2

The Apostle Paul writing to the young pastor Timothy, warned him that in the later times the day would come when those in the church would depart from the faith and would follow seducing spirit and doctrines of devils. My friend, these later times mentioned in God’s word are hear!

Those following these seducing spirits shall find themselves immersed in lies and hypocrisy and having a conscience that is dull to spiritual truths, liken to the flesh that has been seared with a hot iron.

When someone sustained a serious laceration in that day, to control the bleeding the cut would be seared with a hot iron as a means of cauterizing the free bleeding veins. This would stop the bleeding, thereby saving the life, but the negative affects were that the nerve ending surrounding the injury would become desensitized to feeling.

This principle in true in a spiritual sense. The longer a society is immersed in spiritual error, the less likely they are to come out of it. The more desensitized the spirit becomes to truth, even in the face of blatant error.

To validate this point I would like for us to consider the events of the people of God in 722 BC.  The children of Israel sinned against the Lord their God and He allowed the king of Assyria to come up against Samaria and besiege it.

The children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the Lord. They built them high places, and set up images and grooves. They burnt incense in all the high places and wrought wicked things to provoke the Lord to anger. In essence  they left all the commandments of the Lord their God to satisfy the pleasure of sin for a season.

When Assyria laid hold to Samaria, we are told they brought in men from Babylon, Cuthah, Ava, Hamath and from Sepharvaim and placed them in the cities of Samaria. As they began to inner marry with the daughters of Israel they began to work a wicked work, so that the Lord sent lions among them which slew some of them.

Wherefore they spoke unto the king of Assyria saying….

“the nations which thou hast removed and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sen lions among them and behold they slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land”

So the King of Assyria said, bring one of the priest that had been carried away from Samaria and allow him to instruct in the manner of the God of the land. So one of the priest returned and taught the inhabitants of the land concerning the truths of God.

But instead of heeding the warnings of God’s word, we are told that they made gods of their own and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made. They made unto themselves of the lowest of them priest and sacrificed in the houses of the high place and served their own gods after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence. [Reference 2 Kings17]

So what can we learn from this? They had been immersed so long in error and false teaching, that when truth finally stood before them, that they had a spirit void of understanding, and that liken to a ‘searing of a hot iron’ so that their conscience was desensitized to anything but the same error they had immersed themselves in.

My friends, I am so scared that this is the condition of the church in America. We must pray that the church would repent and that we would turn from our sin and back to the truth of God’s word.

  1. Dear Brother Malachi,

This is a good commentary on the searing of conscience that goes on today. We have “Christians” now that vote for godless people who support abominations, because they see nothing wrong. They have heard that abomination were ok for so long that they can ignore these issues, and dismiss them as not relevant, and to be tolerated. So, I guess we can expect the lions to show up soon.

  2. Greetings Marianne, thanks for reading and yes I would say ‘the lion lieth at the door’. Surely God’s judgement cannot be far off. When I consider the error that has succumb the truth in the church it is only because God is giving us what we want.

I liken it to King Saul. The first king that God gave Israel was a king after their own heart. When he failed miserably, God sent them a king after His own heart. I see the same with doctrine in the church. The church, for the most part would rather believe a lie than the truth for it propagates the religion of our day, so as Christ said in His day “leave them alone”, the need a leader and if the blind lead the blind, well nothing left but a ditch. And great shall the pit be.

Peace as you stand upon the firm foundation of His word.
