‘drinking in the merlot of God’s wrath’

“And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: And great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His  wrath.”

In the sixth chapter of The Revelation of John we see the first of three series of judgments (the seals; chapter 6: the trumpets; chapter 8-9 and bowls or (vials) in chapter 16). From the writings it appears the three series of judgments are consecutive, each succeeding one following the preceding one.

Though there are similarities between each series of judgments, there are distinct differences as well as the judgments becoming more intensive and extensive with each level.

The purpose of the judgment is clearly depicted at the beginning of the last series… the vial (bowl) judgment Rev.16:1

“Go your way and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.”

Now one might think that a people immersed in such an environment of catastrophic judgment would by now have rendered a broken and contrite spirit and that a spirit pleading for the mercy of God, but that is not the case at all.

We find that this period of tribulation culminates under voices, thunders, lightning and a great earthquake, such as was not since the men were upon the earth. Along with this horrific storm and earthquake, there is a grievous hail storm, every stone about the weight of a talent (75 lbs), yet we are told that…

“and they gnawed their tongues for pain and blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores and repented not of their deeds”- Rev. 16:10-11

“men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail: for the plague thereof was exceeding great.”- Rev. 16:21

I used to think that wickedness would be brought into subjection if only judgment were wrought against such….

“Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the son’s of men is full set in them to do evil.” Eccl. 8:11

… yet as this tribulation period consummates itself in this grievous judgment from the hand of Almighty God, sinful man stands, shaking his fist defiantly in the face of God. Truly the epitome of the enmity of the sinful heart against a Right and Holy God.

“And I saw an angel standing in the sun and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God”……

drink the merlot of His wrath.

But beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise as some men count slackness, but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all would come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night.

Therefore the Lord will wait, that He may be gracious unto you, and therefore He will be exalted, that He may have mercy upon you: for the Lord is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait on Him.

Today is the day of salvation and there is no other name whereby men might be saved.

And they went and found as he had said unto them and they made ready the Passover. And when the hour was come he sat down and the twelve apostles with him and he said unto them….

“With desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer for I say unto you I will not any more eat thereof until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”

and He took the cup, and gave thanks and said…

“’Take this and divide it among yourselves: for I say unto you I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.”
